Handwoven Baskets from Africa

Binga Baskets: These exquisite baskets are locally produced by the
Tonga
People who live along the Zambezi River, located in Northwestern
Zimbabwe.
The Ilala Grass (similar to palms) is used to weave the
baskets. Women among the Tonga People are the primary basket weavers
and utilize all natural products to create the unique designs found on
each basket. The primary function of the baskets is to winnow grain.

The bark of the Munyiyi Tree is used to create a brown dye and the raw
Ilala Grass is immersed into the dye. The Grass is then hung to dry and
is ready to be woven. A black dye is made from mud which is found along
the banks of the Zambezi River. The zig-zag pattern is called "banjama"
and is representative of animals which are a part of everyday life in
Africa. All patterns are traditional and the designs are passed from
generation to generation.
