Tribal Masks from Africa
Contemporary hanging masks from Eastern Africa (primarily Malawi) are
unique in that instead of being worn during tribal ceremonies designed
to portray specific meaning, the hanging masks of Malawi
are more of a
form of artistic expression.
The mask's face symbolically represents the face of the Carver. The
carvings on the mask are how the carver views the world through his
"eyes" at that moment in time. The View can be as simple as a self
portrait or it can contain a series of events depicting a story.

Standing masks are similar to the hanging masks in artistic expression
and the artist's "eyes". They are simply freestanding. This gives the
owner a chance to display these beautiful works of art away from a wall
or to take advantage of special lighting or special areas of a room.
Wherever the location selected, these masks can creatively transform
any average interior into the exotic.
Our Masks are hand crafted from some of Africa's most precious
hardwoods such as ebony, black or red mahogany, teak and afrormosia.
The artist has enhanced the masks by clever use of the wood grain, just
as much as the artistry of the carving. This effectively adds to the
beauty
and collectibility of each mask.
