Stonecarvings from Africa
Soapstone: Unique and beautiful, these carved statues are true
works of art. The pieces are from Zimbabwe,
located in southeast
Africa. The Shona
Artists of Zimbabwe have for centuries produced some of
the world's most exceptional soapstone handicrafts.
With the use of a rudimentary axe, the original cutting and shaping
takes place. Knives are then used for the actual carving. Chisels are
used for special detailing. After the piece has the shape and
character, the artist then uses sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish.
Finally, the stone is heated and wax is rubbed in, until a brilliant
shine appears.

Verdite
occurs in a variety of patterns and shades, from golden-browns
to rich emerald-greens and blues. Rare and beautiful, verdite is found
only in Southern Africa. Because there are only two known mines of
verdite in the world, these works of art are becoming genuine
investments.
This semi-precious stone is a challenging medium for
sculptures because of its density. Ancient tribesmen crafted verdite
into jewelry and early witch-doctors believed the powdered stone
increased fertility.
